Curious

Books.

I am currently reading three books:

The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism and Asperger’s by Temple Grandin

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

The most recent addition to my bookshelf is Chestnut Street by Maeve Binchy. I saw it at Costco and it was cheaper than on Amazon, so I couldn’t pass it up. It’s next in line for reading. I’ve never read it before, but Binchy’s Tara Road has been one of my favorite books since high school, so I want to read this new one.

I usually have more than one book going at a time, usually from different genres, so I can pick up the kind of book I’m in the mood for at the time.

A couple of days ago, I watched the movie Saving Mr. Banks. It became an instant favorite, and I watched it again today. I think I will watch it very often over the next few months, that’s how much I love it.

It inspired me to re-read all of the Mary Poppins books. There’s 8 of them. It’s probably been over 10 years since I last the first 4, and it’s about time I do it again, and read the last 4 as well. However, I don’t want to just borrow them from the library. No, I want to own them. So, I made a list of all the books so that when I am at the thrift store I can search for them.

Then I couldn’t stop, so I made a list of many other books I want to own…then went to one of my bookshelves for some inspiration.

While looking through my bookshelf, I noticed something curious. On the Romanian books, the titles on the spine are printed opposite the American books. See what I mean?

Curiouser and curiouser.

Captivated by Books

I love holding a book in my hands, getting cozy, and reading.
I also love doing whatever I feel like (cooking, cleaning, resting) and listening to an audio book.

Even when I am here in Romania, I take time to read.

There are some books that captivate me no matter how many times I re-read them.

Namely, Harry Potter.

I just finished re-reading (well, listening to) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with my roommate. And every time I re-read the part where Dumbledore dies, I can’t help but cry. If it’s an audio book, I can’t multitask during the part where they are in the astronomy tower and Snape kills Dumbledore, when they are with Hagrid and he finds out what happened, and when they are in the hospital wing afterwards.

I simply can’t. It is sad every time and I feel like I need to devote my full attention to times like that.

When we were at the beginning of the book, I asked my roommate “Wait, is this the one where Dobby dies? Or is that the next one?” She assured me that it’s the next one, and I said “Oh, good. I’m glad Dobby is still alive.” I later remembered that it couldn’t have been this one because he dies while they are searching for the Deathly Hallows.

Even though Cedric, Sirius,  Dumbledore, Hedwig, Dobby, Fred, and Snape die each time I read the books or watch the movies, it is still sad every time. And if I don’t actually cry, I at least shed a tear. And when I read an earlier book, I am glad they are still alive.

How do books have the power to captivate us over and over again?

Don’t Let the Muggles Get You Down

I saw a cool Harry Potter sweater on Pinterest, and decided to make my own!

It says “Don’t let the muggles get you down”

That’s a quote from Ron’s letter in Harry’s birthday card from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

???????????????????????????????

You’ll need…

  • a blank sweater (I got mine for $3 from a thrift store)
  • fabric paint
  • freezer paper
  • an iron
  • a Cricut machine with a font cartridge you like OR a stencil, a pencil, and scissors
  • cardboard (to place in the sweater while you paint)

Here’s what you do!

Lay out your blank sweater.

DSC08308

Cut the freezer paper to say whatever you want….when you cut it, have the waxy side down (don’t throw away the insides of letters – you’ll need those!).

DSC08323Iron the letters onto the sweater! Make sure the waxy side is on the sweater.

DSC08324Because I was using spray fabric paint, I didn’t want it to get everywhere…so I took FOREVER to cover the outsides in painter’s tape…

Oh and make sure you put the cardboard in between! I used an old box from Amazon.com

DSC08328Then get your paint of choice…

DSC08330

And spray/paint your heart out!

DSC08331You’re supposed to wait until it dries before you peel it all off….but I am impatient, so I took it off while it was still wet…which proved to be a big mistake, because it splattered…

DSC08332

And so to fix that….I made some purposeful splashes…

DSC08333And here it is! As it dried, it got lighter….unfortunately…but I still love it!

???????????????????????????????Hindsight 20/20, here’s what I would’ve done differently…

  • Put the letters closer together
  • Use a darker color

And remember…

Don’t let the muggles get you down.

Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection

One day my friend asked me why I don’t own the Harry Potter movies if I love them so much. I told her it was because I was waiting for the ultimate special editions to come out, in a box set, with director’s commentary and more special features and all that jazz.

My friend Kristi overheard this, and last week she emailed me this…

20131126_155627

…and said…

It’s here. The definitive collector’s edition of Harry Potter. And it’s only $150!!

Apparently it’s really important to me that you see this. .. As I’m sending it in multiple forms. And possibly multiple times. 😉

So I responded with…

I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW I CAN’T EVEN HANDLE IT!!!!!!!!!!

Wait, wait…..$150 from WHERE!? Amazon says it’s $277.60!
I WILL BUY IT.
FORGET ROMANIA. FORGET IRELAND. I WILL BUY IT.
And she said…
Is at Costco my love.  Enjoy!
I was in bed that night, and these were my thoughts…
I want it so badly….it’s only $150….that’s so cheap for what it includes! I have the money, I can totally do it…but no! Stop! Chloe! You’re saving money to go to Romania and Ireland! Stop! You can’t! But this is everything I wanted and more…I’m doing it. I might feel guilty, but I am doing it.
And then I saw my wall…

And the next day….
photo (1)I was in heaven. I cried tears of joy at Costco. It’s true, just ask my cousin. She was there.

I went home and reveled in the goodness. Happiness overcame my whole self. And anyone around me, because all I could do was smile.
I only had like 15 minutes to look at it when I got home…you think it’d be enough, but it wasn’t. I had to go to work…but after work, I took a long time to go through every bit of it. It was glorious.
I went to my mom’s house for Thanksgiving and I showed my family. Their favorite part was watching how excited I was. My brother’s girlfriend even got pictures….
First you open the top for movies…
Thanksgiving 055
Then the sides open…
Thanksgiving 056
And there’s drawers with more movies on either side…
Thanksgiving 058
And then there’s little drawers…this one has a scroll with the information about the digital copy of all the movies…
Thanksgiving 059
The other drawer houses the horcrux, which was already around my neck, of course…
Thanksgiving 060
Thanksgiving 061
Can you tell how happy I am?
There’s also a Label Collection book…
Thanksgiving 062
 And a certificate of authenticity…I have number 22,924 f 63,000!
Thanksgiving 064
And there’s also a collection of scenes…one from each film…on very nice paper that I will be framing when I have my own place one day!
Thanksgiving 065
And there’s another book! A Catalog of Artifacts!
Thanksgiving 066
 …and a blueprint poster of Hogwarts castle…
Thanksgiving 067
And there’s more that I don’t have pictures of…like all 31 discs…the cloth map of Hogwarts (which will be on my wall in my next abode…
I AM SO HAPPY.

The Five-Dollar Savings Plan

034 - Copy

It’s very simple. Every time you get a $5 bill, you save it! At the end of the year, you buy yourself something!

I saw this idea on Pinterest last year, and decided to try it…it was so fun!

Here’s some more details…

Every time you get a $5 bill, you save it. I kept mine in a clip for a long time, until I finally found a shadow box at a thrift store! Then I stored it in the shadow box, simply up on my wall. I used a dry-erase marker to change the amount every time I added a $5.

037

At the end of 2012, I still didn’t have enough money for what I wanted…a Kitchen Aid. If you know me at all, you know that it’s one of my dreams – to own my own Kitchen Aid! So I continued to save, and this weekend I finally got enough!

Here’s a rule (at least for me): YOU CANNOT ACTIVELY SEEK $5 BILLS. What I mean by that is…you can’t ask for your change in $5’s…and you can’t just go withdraw money from the bank and get it in $5’s….that’s cheating!

My first time using my $5 savings plan: Kitchen Aid

So I went to the store and bought it! (You can get the full story here)

It basically felt like I was getting it for free…because the amount in my bank account stayed the same…it was all from the shadow box on my wall! That’s the beauty of The Five-Dollar Savings Plan. I can spend money on myself once a year without feeling bad about it!

050

I WAS SO HAPPY!!! I celebrated by making cupcakes 🙂

Here’s the cupcakes I made with my NEW KITCHEN AID!!!
